NOVA™ Flow in Pittsburgh, PA

Post-operative recovery support at Pittsburgh Center for Plastic Surgery

NOVA Flow is one of the first components of our structured recovery after procedures at PCPS—designed to support healing, comfort, and day-to-day function. Patients often feel the hardest part of recovery in the small things: swelling that lingers, stiffness that limits movement, and skin that looks irritated even when everything is healing normally. NOVA Flow was built to address those bottlenecks with two low-drama modalities that are easy to repeat and easy to integrate: lymphatic-focused therapy and red/infrared light (NOVA Lights).

Used appropriately and timed correctly, these sessions can help patients feel lighter, move more easily, and look more “like themselves” sooner, without adding risk, downtime, or complexity. Our team coordinates NOVA around your normal post-operative appointments and real schedules (work, kids, travel). The goal is simple: steady progress you can feel.

Lymphatics, Made Practical

What Is NOVA Flow?

NOVA Flow is a lymphatic-focused treatment that helps your body move excess fluid and ease post-procedure puffiness. We utilize either deep oscillation therapy (a gentle, low-frequency vibration delivered through gloved hands) or graduated pneumatic compression (a rhythmic squeeze-and-release sleeve) to nudge fluid toward natural drainage pathways. The touch is light, the pace is calm, and most people describe it as soothing. In early recovery, the goal is comfort and momentum: less pressure, easier range of motion, and smoother day-to-day function.

Cue The Lights

What Is NOVA Lights?

NOVA Lights is a red and near-infrared light session that interacts with cellular energy centers to help tissues do their job more efficiently. In everyday terms: better micro-circulation, calmer swelling, and signals that support healthy collagen turnover. No ablation. No heat spikes. Just controlled light, delivered while you rest under the panel. We most often use Lights as a support step when your skin needs a gentle assist. In many cases, we pair them in a planned sequence: Lymphatic first to support fluid movement, then Lights to reinforce calm and circulation. We also time sessions around compression wear, exercise restrictions, travel, and follow-up visits so your recovery plan stays coherent instead of becoming a checklist of add-ons.

Movement Made Effortless

How It Works

  • Deep oscillation therapy uses an electrostatic field through gloved hands to create a gentle internal vibration. It mobilizes tissue fluid without heavy pressure, ideal near incisions or tender zones.
  • Pneumatic compression uses rhythmical, programmed squeezes to encourage lymph flow through the limbs or trunk. Most describe it as a calm “wave.”
  • Red and near-infrared light therapy deliver specific wavelengths that are absorbed by your cells’ mitochondria. Red light works more at the surface; near-infrared penetrates deeper to support tissue recovery and swelling control. It feels like a warm open sauna.

Post-Op to Peak Days

Who It’s For

NOVA is designed to be low-risk, but recovery is not the time for guesswork. Red and near-infrared light contains no UV and does not tan the skin. Sessions are comfortable and non-ablative. As with any light-based service, we review meds and medical history and avoid treatment over active rashes or open wounds. We keep sessions within surgeon guidance, avoid aggressive pressure, and adjust based on the healing stage.  If something feels off, we would rather hear from you early than late.

  • Call promptly for increasing pain, new focal warmth/redness, sudden asymmetric swelling, shortness of breath, or any wound concern.
  • We may defer sessions if you have an active infection, uncontrolled swelling pattern, or symptoms that need medical evaluation first.
  • If you are post-op, we coordinate NOVA timing with your surgeon’s instructions and your compression protocol.

If you’re recovering from a procedure, we’ll align timing with your aftercare instructions. When in doubt, we err on the cautious side.
