Reasons for Breast Implant Revision

BY DENNIS HURWITZ ON JANUARY 02, 2013

The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the world is breast augmentation. During breast augmentation surgery, breast implants are carefully placed into the breast pocket in order to enhance the size, shape, and appearance of the breasts. Even though the vast majority of surgeries are successful, there are cases in which a revision surgery is required or sought out. The team at our Beverly Hills, Philadelphia area, and Pittsburgh plastic surgery centers would like to focus on these matters right now.

What does breast implant revision mean?

Breast implant revision refers to a secondary surgery in which the breast implants are removed and replaced. This can be done for health reasons or aesthetic reasons.

How is breast implant revision performed?

Generally if a patient comes to us requesting a corrective or revision breast implant surgery, we will do our best to be as minimally invasive as possible. When appropriate, will we operate through the incisions made for the original surgery in order to avoid unnecessary scarring. These determinations will be made by our plastic surgeons in Pittsburgh, Chadds Ford, and Beverly Hills. Note that the decisions are always made with the patient’s best interests in mind.

Below are just some of the reasons that patients may decide to undergo a breast implant revision surgery.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a potential side effect of breast augmentation surgery. It describes a condition in which scar tissue forms around the breast implants and begins to compress the implants. This causes the breasts to appear misshapen, and it can be the source of acute discomfort. The breast implant revision will remove the current breast implants and place new ones in such a way that capsular contracture does not occur again.

Ruptured Breast Implants

Breast implant ruptures are another potential side effect/complication of Pittsburgh breast augmentation surgery. Breast implants can leak following hard impacts to the chest area or puncture injuries to the breasts. Women will notice a change in the size and shape of a breast following a breast implant rupture. It should be noted that saline breast implants will lose volume faster than silicone breast implants.

Poor Aesthetic Results

Sometimes following a breast augmentation surgery, a patient may be displeased with the aesthetics. Breasts might be asymmetrical/lopsided, for example, or may be positioned in an off-putting way. In such cases, a breast implant revision will be performed to improve symmetry and contour. These surgeries may not necessarily require the replacement of the breast implant(s), though this is determined on a case-by-case basis.
